Choosing an SEO-Friendly eCommerce Platform for a Strong Foundation
A company with years of Shopify or other online selling experience behind them will first begin to look at the best platform to use to improve website traffic. You can boost traffic for your company, which will, in turn, offer an increased chance of converting leads to purchases.
When choosing which platform you will use to host your business, it is important to review what each platform has to offer.
You should also review the other businesses already using the platform and how those businesses are performing to see if this gives the best foundation.
If you see many similar companies on Magento, switch to another platform for more exposure.
You should consider the number of items you are planning to sell, previous experience with eCommerce sites, and your specifications for the site when deciding which platform you intend to use.
There are case studies available online for most sites, so if you are making the decision yourself, we recommend reading the case study for each site you are considering.
Do Shopify Stores Rank Well in Search
Shopify stores will generally rank well in search results as the company has worked hard to ensure Google and other search engine optimization is in place.
Shopify is also a great platform to start with if you are beginning a new eCommerce venture, as there are so many inbuilt SEO features that will help you with only minimal research needed.
When new to SEO, it can be daunting when researching this via search engine as there are so many specific keywords and pieces of information held within the search results you will find.
The benefit of advertising and managing your online store through Shopify is the tools automatically available to you through the site.
Creating a Successful SEO Strategy for a Brand-new eCommerce Website
When creating your SEO strategy for a brand-new e Commerce site, you must first review what you must achieve when using the website for your digital marketing.
It is not easy when working with any client’s site on a brand-new domain to achieve quick results, as search engines do not trust the content immediately.
The lack of trust for new eCommerce websites means a very specific strategy will be required to improve organic traffic.
This will include an analysis of where the online store or the brand has previously been advertized, any link building previously completed and how this worked, how the product pages are set up, and more.
From the information gathered about previous SEO tactics, you can build an SEO-friendly strategy for your whole website.
About the eCommerce Brand
Focussing on your brand is important even if you have a strong physical store presence. As the owner of a physical store, not all your customers will visit your store in person, either because they do not live close enough or prefer to shop online.
With this in mind, it is important that no matter how well your physical brand is thriving, you still need to focus on your online brand and online presence simultaneously.
Ensuring that your online brand stays relevant is important when attracting potential customers but also when trying to convert website visits into transactions.
You can use a site such as WooCommerce to ensure that all the SEO tactics you focus on are current and working.
You can ensure that link building is being used effectively and that your target keywords are present and are being recognized by search engines.
Shopify SEO Case Studies – Show Me Proof
Due to client confidentiality, we cannot give the specific name or website of the client being discussed below. However, we can show you the very real improvements that were made via SEO investment on Shopify.
We began by reviewing the content already in place for the business. The business we are discussing was a physical store, which had initially succeeded in the move to digital marketing. However, the marketing and sales online had then stalled.
Due to the physical store creating the brand, the company had a Google presence before ever moving to online marketing.
This Google presence was instrumental in the early success of the online site; however, trying to rank higher proved nearly impossible.
To improve the website traffic, we first looked at on page SEO, auditing every aspect of the on page SEO already in place, and looked at keyword research for both the pages and products included on the website.
Websites should be very aware of the on page SEO and keywords included within the site, as Google Analytics will pick up on everything when building the first page search results.
Next, we looked at the off page content, and guest posts are a great way to build links, which is the best way to improve rankings and visitors to your site.
Shopify is set up uniquely so all stores are created as a subdomain, which you link to your main website domain.
This allows you to build links that will be funneled through the subdomain, increasing the off page SEO of your site. Although this does not sound like it will be very helpful, it is a feature many eCommerce sites do not offer, and so it is a benefit to those using Shopify.
The outcome was an almost 450% increase in total sales and over 200% more visitors to the client’s site over ten months. This was compared to the previous ten-month period for the same client.
With increases in this volume, it is clear that using the right Shopify tools for your SEO strategy can yield big rewards for your business.
Perform The WordPress SEO Setup
The WordPress SEO setup may sound daunting when described as a 28-step process. However, the setup is not difficult to complete. To ensure your WordPress website is placed highly in a Google search, we recommend that you research and complete the SEO setup steps.
Case Study – Store 2
The second store we worked with to improve its SEO again cannot be named for confidentiality reasons; however, it was an existing online store. The online shop for this client was on an aged domain and was extremely outdated.
Our first action was to check if what was already in place could be salvaged and reinvented into a website we thought could work. When reviewing what was in place, we decided to remove the website’s entire content and leave the domain dormant until work could be done on the website’s content.
The project of removing and reinventing the website was the best option for this client as there was too much to rework from what was existing.
We employed very similar techniques as in the case study above and installed Shopify when relaunching the website.
The results speak for themselves: over 1300% increase in sales over three months with an almost 400% increase in customer visits to the website.
Although this website had been dormant, and an increase when relaunching was inevitable, the level of increase for this client was an excellent start to their relaunch.
Content Review and Keyword Research
One of the most important steps in any SEO plan is reviewing a website’s content and completing keyword research. We will look at the keywords on your website and review the rankings of each of the keywords. From there, we will know which keywords are ranking high already and which need to be improved.
Keyword research also involves implementing short and long-tail keywords that fit the Google search results of the customers clients wish to attract to their websites.
With those keywords in mind, we can then ensure they are included within the pages of client websites to keep customers engaged.
Silos in SEO links pages within a similar topic together to improve the relevance of a website. Keyword research is essential as it will help you to establish which categories and keywords users are searching for or interacting with the most.
From this information, widgets can be created to interlink the pages across the web automatically to increase traffic.
Track WooCommerce Customers in Google Analytics
Analyzing the existing data for a customer is the easiest place to start. Finding out where on the web users are being directed from and which links they are clicking to get to your e Commerce store is important.
This information will show you which backlinks are working for you and which need to be developed.
Google Analytics is the best place to start with this, as all of the data will be held within your account. You can then use the Google Search Console to track improvement as your SEO is developed.
Building links that increase your site’s authority with search engines such as Google is something you need to approach carefully. Building too much too quickly can work against you.
The best thing to do is to monitor the number of links you build each month, increasing the monthly number over time rather than all at once.
Also, you should look at the pages you are building links to and from; do not just use the home pages each time; build the link to the specific product or service you also offer.
Optimize Product Slug
A slug is a nice name that a product is titled on WordPress to be used in the URL and is the product’s title as you have named it. The problem with this is that some default slugs do not have any SEO optimization of keywords included.
Do not worry, though; this can be changed simply by accessing the SEO settings for each product that does not have an optimized slug. You can then enter the desired keywords to optimize your content.
eCommerce store speed
If your eCommerce store is running slowly, it will not matter how many backlinks you have created or how much you have advertized your company, as you will lose visitors and conversions each time your website is accessed.
It is important that you check the speed at which pages are opening and ensure that there are no delays.
Add SEO Titles and Descriptions for Product Categories
The titles you use for your products are what will show in the browser bar when consumers access that product, so it is important that titles and descriptions are also optimized. When using WooCommerce, you can set up a product and title page for each category.
This will allow you to use more of the keywords that you have found to be effective for the SEO optimization of your products and increase the traffic to those pages.
The description that you use within the SEO menu will not show within your store. However, it will be used by search engines when consumers are searching for products.
Finally, you can round off your SEO-optimized title and description with images that showcase what you have for sale. Images are often the first or last thing companies consider when setting up their store online.
Either everything is focused on the images, and the SEO is lackluster, or the images are the last thing to be inserted and do not do the products justice.
Off-Page SEO is any SEO activity that takes place outside of your website that increases your ranking and SERPs. Off-page SEO can include guest posting, which will direct users back to your e Commerce store.
Technical Ecommerce Issues
Additionally, long metadata and unnecessary scripts for pages are very common issues for many companies. There are many tools that you can access to help with all of these issues, which will increase the load speed of your store.
Structured Data Improvements and Schema Markups Allowed for Rich Search Snippets
Snippets are what you see when you search for something, and the answer to your question gives short pieces of text from web pages.
With questions, it usually answers everything the searcher needs, so they do not need to access the full webpage. However, for eCommerce stores, it is a chance to get yourself on the SERP and show off what you have to offer.
A rich snippet includes links to your webpage so that when consumers look for a product, your linked page shows on the results. Updating each product to include the structured data that will get it recognized for a search engine results page is important to keep directing consumers to your company.
Optimize Website Speed and Performance
When ranking websites, Google places importance on the speed of websites as one of the biggest factors that decide the ranking, so if your web pages run faster, they will rank higher.
Some studies show that even a one-second delay in page loading can decrease customer satisfaction by at least 15%, page views drop by 10%, and conversions by over 5%. It is worth investing in a host server that will meet your customer’s needs.
AMP Pages Results in Mobile Traffic Improvements
Introducing accelerated mobile pages for the products and information on your website can have a considerable impact on the conversion rates for your products.
Most people will see something they are interested in and want to look into it more immediately, so optimizing for mobile devices is the best thing to do right now.
Backlinks are an essential part of optimizing your WooCommerce content. Backlinks are links to and from other websites to your content. The backlinks in place prove to your clients that other companies trust you and your products.
Additionally, backlinks can help to direct clients to your pages from another site, so if you do not have the correct or enough backlinks in place, you will be losing money.
Building backlinks may seem difficult; however, although it can take time, it is not a difficult thing to do.
Overall Traffic in Jul-December 2019 vs. Jul-December 2018 – 107% Increase
The techniques we have discussed above really do work; a 107% increase in traffic for the same six-month period, one year proves this.
You may not need to implement all of the above, and it may be trial and error until you find what works best for your business, but keep working at it.
Paid advertising and duplicate content across platforms are just not enough. With so many businesses creating backlinks to improve their web presence, you must go further.
Rest assured, though, we can help you.
